Magick & Divination
Candle

Using Candles for Magickal Intent:

Throughout the ages, mankind has associated certain colours with specific feelings or actions. For example, Red usually means love, White means Peace, and Black is commonly associated with evil. Renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung considered colour to be an important aspect of archetypes; that is, the symbolic imagery of our subconscious.

When using candles for Magickal purposes then, it makes sense to use the colour/s that have symbolic meaning which correspond to your intent.

The colour correspondences I am using here have been compiled from various sources. These are the ones that made the most sense and had the most meaning for me. For more specific reading, please see the bibliography at the bottom of the page.

Colour Correspondences:

Black: Protection, Dispel Negativity
Dark Purple: Powers of the Ancients
Dark Green: Goddess of Regeneration, Finances
Mint Green: Financial Gain (use with Silver or Gold)
Green: Improved Health
Avocado Green: New Beginnings, Employment
Light Green: Improved Weather
Indigo: Astral Projection
Blue: Protection
Royal Blue: Power and Protection
Light Blue: Protection of Home and Young
Ruby Red: Love or Passionate Anger
Red: Romantic Love
Light Red: Affection (non-sexual)
Pink: Harmony and Friendship
Yellow: Healing, Memory (use while studying to retain info)
Deep Gold: Prosperity. Sun Magick
Gold: To attract something
Pale Gold: Prosperity in Health
Orange: Material Gain, To Seal Spells
Brown: Peace in Home, Herbal Magick
Pale Brown: Material Benefits in Home
Silver: Quick Money, Moon Magick
Off-white: Peace of Mind
White: Purity, Ritual Magick (on Sabbats and Esbats), or use to substitute any other colour!

Examples of colour choices:

1. Your Mom and little sister have been fighting constantly. I would choose: Brown, Light Blue and Black. (Peace in home, protection of young, dispel negativity).

2. You and your loved one had an argument and haven't been speaking to each other in a week. I would choose: Light Red, Pink, Gold and Black. (Affection, friendship and harmony, attraction, and dispel negativity. You don't want to be using the hormone factor to mend a broken relationship -- it won't solve anything).

3. You have been trying to find a job and have no money to pay bills etc. I would choose: Avocado Green, Mint Green, Deep Gold and Off-white. (Employment, financial gain, prosperity, and peace of mind).

Some Guidelines:

First and foremost, a candle spell is not a quick fix. Burning candles will not help you get a job if you're not out there applying for one. It will not help you mend your relationship with your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse if you do not talk it out and solve the problems together.

So why use candle magick? Casting a candle spell helps you to focus on your course of action and clearly direct what it is you need to the universe. In example 1 a spell may help ease the negative energy in your home, calm mom and little sis down so they can make up. In example 2 it will help you to sit down and realize what part you played in the argument and what you need to do or change so it won't happen again. In example 3 a candle spell could provide you with inspiration as to what your dream job is and what you need to do to get it, as well as allowing the universe to open up some 'coincidental' factors in your favour.

I use candles along with oils, sachets and meditation. Again, it will not dump a quick solution in your lap, but I have seen results in my own life. No efforts go un-rewarded by the universe, and it can't hurt to try, right?

One last note: Please, Please, Please do not use spells to try to manipulate people to do what they would not normally do! Not only is it morally wrong, but also everything you put out to the universe will come back to you three-fold!! Good or bad!

So, if you are lonely and looking for love, do a general love spell with no particular person in mind. The universe just may open some doors for you and help you to meet some people. Remember the last line of the Wiccan Rede: If it harms none, do what thou will!

Write Your Own Spells!

Before you do your candle spell, pick the god or goddess most appealing to you for your intent, and write them a short spell or poem. It doesn't need to be any more than 4 to 8 lines long, and make it rhyme. It's so much easier to say that way. Sure, there are lots of already written spell books out there, but it will be more meaningful and effective if it's a creation of your own!

Happy Casting and Blessed Be!
